Scrappy Stripes are fingerless mittens that are knit starting from the thumb. The garter stitch hand is worked around the thumb, forming a striped square. When it reaches the desired width, the square is folded and its two sides are joined on the bind off row.

The mittens are a perfect way to use small amounts of yarn left over from other projects: I used tiny balls of Miss Babs Yummy 2-Ply and Tarte I collected after several projects.

Yarn

Small amounts of fingering weight yarn - you can use yarn left over from other projects.

My size 2 sample was knit with the following yarns:

For stripes in contrast colours (CC), Miss Babs

Yummy 2-Ply (100% Superwash Merino Wool):

Stripe 1−CC1: Caribbean Flamingo: 7 m/8 yds

Stripe 2−CC2: Ergosphere: 8 m/9 yds

Stripe 3−CC3: Dahlia: 9 m/10 yds

Stripe 4−CC4: Spicy Papaya: 10 m/11 yds

Stripe 5−CC5: Ugli: 11 m/12 yds

Stripe 6−CC6: Sunny: 12 m/13 yds

Stripe 7−CC7: Iantha: 13 m/14.5 yds

Stripe 8−CC8: Hyperbole: 14 m/15.5 yds

Stripe 9−CC9: Blue Poppy: 15 m/16.5 yds

For background colours (BC), Miss Babs Tarte (75% Superwash Merino Wool, 15% Nylon, 10% Tencel):

Thumb and ribbing−BC1: Pewter: 100 m/110 yds

Background stripes−BC2: Quicksilver: 120 m/130 yds

For size 1, use CC1 to CC8 only; for size 3, add 16 m/18 yds in another colour (CC10).

If you want to use the same variegated yarn for all CC stripes, instead of making each stripe in a different colour, you will need a total of approx. 95 (100, 110) m/105 (110, 120) yds of CC yarn.
